Hello fellow classmates of '59.
It seems like only yesterday when I last saw everyone at the
reunion.
In that short time I have retired, moved to Florida and enrolled
in the Graduate program in Architecture at Florida International
University.
Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to our next re-
union( God willing ).

Good to read message from Richard . There are plenty of LHS and area
residents still in area who recall facts and stories. Don't know how
to get them to tell their stories for many to enjoy. Local newspapers,
Nassau herald and South Shore Record sometimes have " history "
columns. Women in League of women Voters and members of the various
Senior centers too would probably like to share their stories.

Someone related to Mary McConnell Abbott, class of 1941 , is seeking
information. Contact Barbara Kaustaklis, daughter, if you can help.
Kausfam@earthlink.net. Thanks.

Meteorite shower tonight and am now on way to view it.

Dear All,
I happened to have a few free minutes aat my computer and had the LHS
web site come up- you really have done a wonderful job. Now that all 3
of our children and their spousees are living in New York we are abit
more interested in our New York roots. We did manage to visit the Five
Towns and were impressed as to how well everything has been kept up
but honestly it had a very differeent feel.
I enjoyed seeing the ski pictures of Bob Lewitt and would hope to meet
some Lawrencians on the slopes.
Otherwise we still lead a very busy life in Washington and look
forward to things coming back towaard normal after Sept. 11.

other 2 messages I sent in the guestbook cut off my maiden name.

I was so excited to find this site but at the same time I was
disappointed to find out that I had missed a 1959 reunion.

Is it possible to still obtain a 1959 yearbook?

cathy stein   12/Jul/2001:17:21:03
Hello!! I am on the committee for Lawrence 30th reunion (August 4 at the
Omni Diner). First, I want to tell you how awesome your website is! One
of our classmates, Alan Bluman, has created a web site for us and it is
so much fun!! Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions as to good
giveaways we could have at the reunion? Is there a person at the high
school who would have information like this? Any suggestions would be
appreciated!

Cathy Miller-Stein   21/Jun/2001:22:27:51
This is so much fun, reading what other grads have written! Our class of
'71 is having our 30th reunion this August 4 in the Omni Diner in
Uniondale. It has been great connecting with people I haven't spoken to
in years and others who I only knew superficially but who I wanted to
get to know! I am really looking forward to this event and so I hope
lots of my classmates will come!

Am I the last survivor of the class of 1931 which seem to have gone
with the pterodactyls! From that era, I possess afew remaining feathers
such as year books of several classes starting with 1929.FYO Your "old"
school was the "new" school that opened as I was graduated from the OLD
yellow brick school on Central Avenue. Cecil C. MacDonald was Principal
then. A fine man. L.V. Dodd was science teacher. Among the best of very
many I've had over the 70 years since those years. It has been a rather
unusual life. I suppose everyone's is. Among many things, I have worked
for Carnegie Hall, US Army Air Corps(WWII), SED at Los Alamos on the
ABomb, and after 29 more years, retired from IBM (20 years ago) earned
a BSME and M.S. Have had 3 wives,(noneconcurrently) and 3 kids. As a
student at Lawrence, I was called "Suzie" by the clas. To this day
remember the horror of it and can understand thoroughly gunplay in the
schools. It has a denigrating effect and took me many years to recover.

Steve Miller   04/Jun/2001:23:00:15
Every so often I go to the LHS web site and read the names of those I
went to school with.I am sorry I was unable to attend the last
reunion.I am not certain how many people recall who I am since I
attended another school the last 2 years of high school.Perhaps, the
next one. It's great how so many of you remained in touch with one
another all these years.

john m. weil long gone 16/May/2001:22:57:32
I was graduated with the class of 1931. Yes, 1931. I flunked English so
I was "left back". Should have finished in 1930. I lived at 14 Weston
Place in Lawrrence with my parents and sister. Prior to that, we lived
in an apartment house on the corner of Central Avenue and "the Turnpike"
a red brick 4 story bldg. Mr Gregorius ran the corner drug store on the
street floor. The "new" high school near Rock Hall where we ice skated
every winter was completed in 1932, so I attended and graduated from
the yellow brick building on Central Avenue halfway between turnpike
and Lawrence Avenue where L.I.R.R. sat, on edge of Inwood. I recall
some of the stores on Central Ave. "Sol Rutter, Eggs and Butter "Bowker
the bike shop." "Little Washngtn Mkt". The Fire Station and its horn.
Also the Gottesmann Estate on the corner of B'way and T'pike where the
hill on Meadow Lane started. ANd many other memories, some pleasant,
many not so. I was very quiet as a child, and teased a lot;was
called "Susie Weil

March 29, 2001 Kuddos to Barry Endelson for creating this important
link for Lawrence Alumni! I'm looking forward to my 40th class reunion
this coming October. I'm a playwright; and I was so moved by the
incredible spirit at my 30th high school reunion that I collaborated on
a musical "Horses in the Attic: A Class Reunion". It previewed in
Seattle in the Fall of 1999 to a full house and a lot of laughter and
tears. Classmate Carole Yaffee Blake wrote wonderful lyrics which
captured many of the creative team's (Coauthor Kenn Wilk and composer
Donald Shabkie) collective feelings. The play, which is undergoing some
"polishing", is a generic celebration of class reunions and a coming of
age into middle age (which of course is getter older and older as we
redefine what that means). We're hoping for a world premiere in the
near future. Blessings to all!

NICE JOB '59 . . . I ONLY HOPE THAT I CAN MASTER THIS COMPUTER TO SET
UP OUR REUNION PAGE IN 2002 FOR OUR CLASS OF 1947 - 55th REUNION WHICH
I'M PLANNING FOR THE SUMMER OF 2002. I GOT OUT OUR 50th REUNION LIST
AND I'M IN THE PROCESS OF ENTERING IT INTO MY COMPUTER. JUST A LITTE
TIDBIT OF LHS HISTORY - I KNOW THAT MANY OF YOU IN THE CLASS OF 1959
WILL REMEMBER MY FATHER CONO MAZZA WHO WAS HEAD CUSTODIAN AT LHS FROM
ITS OPENING IN 1934 UNTIL HE PASSED AWAY IN 1964. A LITTLE UNKNOWN FACT
IS THAT HE ALWAYS HAD A FAMILY MEMBER ATTENDING LHS IN ALL THOSE 30
YEARS. THEY WERE MANY NICES AND NEPHEWS, A SON AND TWO DAUGHTERS. HE
WAS VERY PROUD OF THAT FACT. HE ALSO LOVED LHS IT WAS HIS SECOND HOME.

I'm a graduate of LHS 1975, as well as my brother Abe "Mike" Crews
(1971), my sisters; Deborah Crews Long (1972) -&- Sharon Crews Grant
(1973). It was great reading all the comments from the alumni who went
to LHS (which was my Lawrence Jr. High School). My stepdad was also a
graduate of LHS (Robert Jones). It's ironic my Mom remarried in
1975 to "Bob" -&- I married a Jones (no relation, of course) in 1993. I
spent over 20 years in Upstate, NY (Buffalo -&- Rochester) -&- just recently
relocated to Tallahassee, Fl. in January 2000. Amazingly, I am working
at Florida A-&-M University -&- I spotted an older gentleman who appeared to
be a teacher I remembered from my H.S. days. I got up enough nerve to go
over -&- ask him, "Are you Mr. Thomas Mitchell?". He said, "yes". He
worked at the school from 1971-1979. It's really a small world!! He's
now working at FAMU since 1979!! I haven't attended any H.S. reunions
for the Class of '75, but would love to participate in the future. All

Upon checking this website I realized that I entered my sister Lenora's
comments in the LHS'59 section rather than in the LHS'60 section. When
her husband Bill didn't arrive in NY in time, I went to the '60 reunion
with Lenora. It was grand. By the way, does anyone know a website for
LHS'58 class and for Far Rockaway '58, '59 or '60? I've received
inquires. Sue Kolbrener will be in NYC next week Found Robin Stockton
through her sister Joan, class of '60. Hope everyone is well.

It has been a wonderful experience be back in touch with so many of the
people that were and still are part of my life. I really consider
myself very fortunate. Christmas Eve when I closed my store and headed

profitable season for the jewelry business and I love what I do.
Allentown, Pa. is a great place to live and my children and their
families are close by. Greta and I, well it's really her idea think a
group of us should get together for dinner in the big apple after New

It was wonderful to see everyone at the reunion! Although many were not close friends during High School, this evening brought out many old memories, and I was able to remember so many good times. Speaking with each one was a treat, and the evening was especially pleasant for me and my wife, Phyllis....who has heard the old stories throughout the years. The next day at Joel Gallof and Linda's was the chance to visit one on one with so many, and rekindle some of the really great friendships from high school days. The entire experience of the reunion was very meaningful to me, and I'm very glad I was a part of it. I would really like to keep in touch with anyone who would care to write....Bermanesq1@AOL.com.....and hope the next years are filled with new/old friends......Joel Berman

Post Reunion: It was the MOST wonderful evening and the feelings
continue. I was so resistant to going because I felt few would remember
me, but I was wrong!

Everyone looks pretty much the same, I think. More important, everyone
seemed open and knowable and eager to relate. I rekindled old
friendships and, I think, will have some new-old ones as well.

Steve's slide show was wonderful and captured so much of the time. I
haven't stopped talking about our reunion and I have been on the phone
with several of you, continuing the moment.

How wonderful to be able to "skip" through 40 years and feel like a
teenager again, and how wonderful to be able to do it with some of you
who were my closest friends. I am so thrilled to be in contact again,
and I can't wait to get together in small groups or one-on-one to talk.
Love to you and PLEASE keep in tou

Well,it's great to catch my breath again. After 14+ months of getting
together with the rest of the committee and the building up of the
excitement for the weekend, it was like being the parent at a wedding
or Bar-Mitzvah.It went so fast from Saturday night thru Monday at 7
pm.I must apologize to all those lovely ladies that I told were my
first dates back then,it was just a fantasy of 40+ years-Thanks
Ladies!!! Brunch at my house on that spectacular day--looking at
scrapbooks and tapes of Little league and Babe Ruth days of 1953 thru
1957. We also got a little more of those hugs and kisses. Hopefully,
they will carry me thru until we can all get together again.
Linda and I thank you all for attending our Brunch-She can't wait to
start cooking again.
Love and Kisses,
Joel

The reunion was everything I hoped for and more. Seeing P.S.5 "family"
and Lawrence High School "friends" was a very emotional experience.
This was especially evident on Monday, 10/11/99, in a Manhattan
restaurant. While I was drinking a cup of coffee and reviewing the
impact of the previous evening, joyful tears rolled down my face. I
welcome the opportunity to keep up with as many of you as possible.
Kudos to the committee for making this memorable event possible!

george maringer   11/Oct/1999:21:37:29
Kudos to the Reunion Staff who did a superb job in finding and bringing
together almost a third of the graduating class.
The evening turned into a trip back into time with everything
happening at slow speed and witha haze over my memory. Most of my
classmates names while indelibly etched in my mind are not easily
associated with the faces present.
One always thinks they haven't changed much until they come face
with their past and then reality sets in and one recognizes that even
they have changed. Sure many of our classmates were easier to recognize
than others but entering the room and scanning the name tags and trying
to find old friends and acquaintences was an experience I will never
forget.
I hope that many of us will take this opportunity and re-
connect with past friends and keep the bond of friendship together.
I for one will look forward optimistically and hope to see you
all for our 50th in 2009.
Once again thanks for rekindling old m

Marlene and I had a wonderful time at the reunion of the best class
ever to graduate from LHS. The evening was simply fabulous and it
flowed so easily and seemingly without effort because of all the
skillful work done by our reunion committee. Our thanks to all.

Eric A. Jaffe   11/Oct/1999:17:12:09
I had a wonderful time and it was great to see every one. I hope to be
able to continue my connections with some of the people I met and had
not seen in many years.

Bob Weinstein   11/Oct/1999:15:07:22
October 11, 1999 By email to Barry Endelson:
Hi......It's been years ince we have seen each other or talked and yet
somehow the high schools seem indelibly etched in my mind. Those years
were excptionally carefree, silly and fun. I don't remember Jim
(Nagourney) setting me on fire but if he did the I owe him one with 40
years of interest. If you keep in contact with him give him my regards.

I want to tell you that ....you.... and the other people responsible
for the bringing about of this reunion did a wonderful job. I don't
think anyone could have done as good a job. I am sorry I wasn't able to
attend and renew old acquaintances and friendships. I am sure it was
very interesting to see high school buddies that in some cases you
haven't seen in 20 or more years.

Have a great time and hope to see you and all the others at the
50th. Bob

Gail Avidon   11/Oct/1999:10:32:14
the reunion was wonderful! ithink there were a great many shy people in
high school.everyone seems to have lost their shyness. thats what made
the reunin especially enjoyable for me. thanks to the committee for
doing a great job.hope too see you all at the 50th.

Rick Mindlin Lawrence High School 1959 Reunion 09/Oct/1999:09:57:55
Oh, one more thing:

As a concession to middle-age (which is what I am--at best) I came here
for this event by airplane (pitstoppng in D.C. to attend a convention).

But I was seriously considering coming here from L.A. (where I mostly
live) on my newest motorcycle, which I had just 2 weeks ago ridden to
Vegas... Well,.. for the 50th. reunion, should I be 'available', I
think I'll ride my at-then new bike to the event.

Rick Mindlin Lawrence High School 1959 Reunion 09/Oct/1999:09:51:55
Well, at the 11th. hour I tracked down George Maringer (see his
comments in the preceding entry, and thankfully he's coming tomorrow.

I see in his commentary he's still alluding to me as "Ricky"--just as
Bobby Weinstein calls me. [If I'm ever going to be old enough to be
called Rick, it seems to me it oughta be pretty soon.]

But actually that's the nutshell of the concept of a reunion: A chance
to be called "Ricky" once again--just one more time.

See you all this afternoon.

P.S. I notice Jerry Lautin doesn't call me Ricky, or even Rick. He
still has his pet name for me: "S_____k".

george maringer   08/Oct/1999:21:34:14
Just read all the great commentary.
It was nice to see that " Ricky " hasn't changed a bit.
I have seen and been in contact with Mike Levy periodically since
we both ended up working in the Garment Center.
If " Ricky " ends up playing and singing I hope the years have been
good to his abilities.
Sorry to see that Bob Weinstein and several others would be unable
to attend. Would have loved to have been found for the 25Th reunion.
and Ricky my last convertible was my 58 DODGE.
What blue chevy convertible did you have, all I remember is
your BlueMGA , Jerry Lautin's ever clean red Chev covertible, and I
think Bobby Weinstein had a 58Impala convertible.
See you all on Sunday

GEORGE MARINGER   08/Oct/1999:21:14:57
I can't believe how fast 40 years passed.
I am looking forward to renewing old friendships.
See you all on Sunday.

Greta Selkowe Fertik   08/Oct/1999:07:15:53
Hello! I've been in contact with a few of you and it would be
wonderful to hear from others. We (Bill and I) will join you for drinks
at the Marriott Saturday evening, but we're not sure we can make it
Sunday.

Thanks to Barbara Freifeld for her persistent efforts and also to Arthur
Emsig. I understand there are others on the committee as well.

Heard Adrianne is coming in from Israel! Also heard Steve Langfur is
there but cannot make it. I will miss some of those who are no longer
with us, especially Janie (Newblatt) and Laurie (Mayer) and Paul
(Jacobsen).

Looking forward to seeing you

Gail Hillen (Dodge)   07/Oct/1999:13:09:34
Sorry unable to attend Sunday. Will be there in spirt. Have a FUN TIME!.
Thanks to the committee
for a job well done.

marjory heyman slobe   06/Oct/1999:22:25:28

The web site is so great it makes this time travel seem like a safer bet then it probably is. I can remember everyone in my first grade class at #1 but high school is a bit of a blur. I am looking forward to Sunday and putting together old memories. see you soon.

Mystery Man Lawrence High School 1959 Reunion 04/Oct/1999:23:00:16
Hey Bobby Weinstein,

According to my books, I loaned you $10 on October 4, 1958. This was at
the Town Diner. And that was for lunch--for a whole week! For you and
another guy!

You said you'd pay me back the next day, which I didn't believe. And
you didnd't do. And you STILL HAVEN'T PAID. The interest on that, at a
measly 10%, compoundedly daily (My SOP re delinquent accounts), for 41
years, is approx. $632. So why don't you come to the Reunion party, and
give me my now (counting the original principal) $642! If you don't
have the $642, just come anyway. [Reply in this space whether you're
coming, and if I'll see my money.].

Rick MIndlin Lawrence High School 1959 Reunion 03/Oct/1999:17:02:46
Nov. 6, 1958 diary (con. further).. Made a date with Louise Stamper for
this Saturday's football game. I've got to figure a way to get out of
this. I hate football--and am not that thrilled with Louise either (and
she's rah rah about this football crap). Maybe I can figure how to palm
her off on George Maringer. He likes her anyway. This won't be easy,
since she thinks, correctly, that he's an animal... I better call Jerry
right away. Maybe he can think of a scheme.

And tonight I'll have to study for that stupid Mr. Ahner's chemistry
test. Him and his experiments--wish he'd think of one to blow himself
up. My only hope is to position myself next to Pollak. Trouble is, he's
so damn straight-laced he won't even let me look at his paper. Just my
luck--to pick a guy like him for a friend. You know, that Ahner isn't
as bad as that geezer Mrs. Pozner, the Spanish teacher. At least he
doesn't hit you over the head with a ruler to get through to your head.

Rick Mindlin Lawrence High School 1959 Reunion 03/Oct/1999:16:54:36
Nov. 6, 1958 diary (con) Richie as usual was studying (Guy is wasting
his time. Always has his nose in a book, like he's trying to become a
doctor or something!). Fortunately I didn't need him--because I got
hold of old reliable, Jerry Lautin, who's always available to chase the
chicks along Central Avenue.

I had to confer heavy tonight with Vic Milt (love that Metropolitan he
has--it's the essence of cool!), about that little embarrassment today
in English class. I got caught with a cheat sheet--with the answers to
test questions that Mrs. (can't even think of her name now)hadn't even
asked yet! I had quite some explaining to do to Mr. Kriz, and somehow I
did (My record is still intact: I can talk my way out of anything! But
sometimes I need a little help from a Harold Avent, as per above. Had
to speak to Vic--who had given me the cheat sheet; but I notice that he
didn't get caught! (There's no fairness about anything these days.).

Rick Mindlin Lawrence High School 1959 Reunion 03/Oct/1999:16:13:47
Nov 6, 1958

Dear Diary,

Mike Levy came to school today in his new trenchcoat and carrying an
umbrella (It was not raining!)--like he's trying to be Bogart as Sam
Spade, or like a junior Cary Grant (his idol). He says the outfit gives
him class--or is a reflection of the class he already has (I told him
it's neither one--it' just a trench coat).

One of the guys told me he's still working on getting a date with Joan
Ostrow (He's been telling me this since 1956, with no results. Another
one told me he has his eyes on Dolores Morse (I told him thi is a prime
example of "one way vision").

I got into a little fight out in the parking lot after school today,
and Bobby Weinstein gave me some help--which didn't appear like it was
going to be good enough. Luckily Harold Avent came along. That was good
enough--a stiff warning by Harold to the other guys, who went scurrying.

Then I wanted to go cruising around town in my '56 Chevy turquoise and
white convert., and called Richie Pollak

Hi again everybody. Please try my 50's trivia game (see Home Page).
As Dan Quayle would probably write, "These anniverseree things like
reyunions are funn. We should do them at leest 4 times a year!"

See you all at the party, and at the Sat. get-together.

Bob Weinstein   28/Sep/1999:10:13:49
The idea of a 40th. year high school reunion is fantastic and I give
credit to all of you who have taken the time and effort to bring this
about. It would be great to see everyone and find out what has happened
in 40 years. I'm sure we all look exactly as we did when we were kids.
Unfortunately at this time I am not sure that I can attend as I am in
business in Florida and my time is pretty much accounted for. If I can
get there it will be a last minute thing. In case I dont get to see you
I want to wish everyone well and hope that there might be a 50th
reunion where we can bring our grandchildren.

Judy Grebin   27/Sep/1999:12:41:15
Hi!
Looking forward with great anticipation to our reunion! Hard to believe
that forty years have passed. Since graduating from Skidmore, have been
employed by the N. Y. C. Board of Education as a Biology Teacher and
Assistant Principal of Science at a high school at Lincoln Center in
Manhattan. Can't wait to catch up with all of you.

be able to make it, but it's been terrific seeing all the familiar
names. Kudos to Barry and the committee.

The web site will continue after the Reunion unless my wife serves me
for divorce on the grounds of abandonment and neglect due to this
computer.

Joan Herman   22/Sep/1999:18:54:57
I just got my new computer yesterday and this is my first attempt at
communication. Actually this is my first computer!!!!!! I have not
figured out the spell check yet and I don't think I'm any better than I
was in high school. Now I know what my mother meant when she said she
was afraid to touch my stereo set. What I would like to figure out is
how to get this stupid thing to stop playing "Rock Around the Clock". I
can't wait to see everyone. The web site has been terrific. Hope we
can keep it up after the reunion. Barry has done a spectacular job as
have all the volunteers. Can't wait to see you all next month.

Bob Braunstein   19/Sep/1999:18:23:31
Only by chance I found the committee in February. My son is getting
married the same day; therefore, I will not be able to attend the
reunion, but it has been great talking to the group for the last
several months. Have a wonderful time.

Steve Langfur's letter mentioning soph history reminded me of Mr. Uhlar;
I credit him with teaching me how to think. ...Were these teachers as
great as we think they were, or were we just ripe? Both, no doubt.
-- I'd better stop rambling, or we won't have a thing to talk about at
the renunion.

We will not be able to attend the reunion -very special 35th
anniversary that same weekend.

Over the years we have lived in Conn.,Texas, St.Louis, and Philadelphia,
before returning back to Long Island. With the exception of Mike

As we go through life even our name changes. Mine are (in chronological
order) Rickypoo, Ricky-boy, Ricky, Rick, Mr. Mindlin, Rick Mandell (my
AKA), sir, Pops, the deceased.

According to Victor Milt, Bob Weinstein, and Mike Levy, I am still
"Ricky" (I don't recall being called that as late as high school; but I
guess I was.). Maybe they are nostalgic, senile, or frozen in time--
and subconsciously think it's still 1959. That's what these reunions
will do, are even meant to do--cause us to subliminally at least think
that no time has passed--that it's still Bobby Weinstein talking to
Ricky Mindlin... And we all wish it were so.

everyone. By the way, our " webmaster " is away for a few days, thus
no updates for a short time. Spoke with Sharon Monoson Seiden and

classmates. MaryAnn Marcantonio Anguili is updating class directory
tonight. We have many more names. That's terrific. One room is left

Forty Years seems llike a very long time. Where did the years go?

Barbara informed me Sunday, August 30, 1999 I was on the missing list.
I am not lost just living in the foothills of the Adirondacks, also
known as the Tug Hill Plateau. If you want to know what the Adirondack
life is all about browse my the website that I put together with a
photographer Jerry. We will be interested to hear your comments.

The High School website is truly wonderful and creative. It must have
taken a very long time to put together. I can apprecitate the
accomplishment knowing the pains and the frustrations that I
encountered with my website. A website is a continuing process so I'm
sure the High School Website will continue to change with numbers and
information as people surface.

In closing I do thank the efforts of the Committee. Without such
dedicated souls there would never be reunions.

Hello to all. Sharon Monoson Seiden
